How Jason Statham's Most Divisive Action Thriller Gave Him a Unique Challenge

Critics have never fully known what to do with Jason Statham. The reflex is to file him under reliable-but-unambitious and move on. After all, he’s a man who found his niche and defended it across two decades without so much as batting an eye. While the verdict is understandable, it’s also incomplete. Watch Spy, or The Bank Job. Watch Crank, a movie that sustains a pitch of pure derangement for 88 minutes and somehow leaves you buzzing by the end. The range has always been there; Hollywood just rarely asks for it. And when Statham spent a 2011 press tour explaining why Killer Elite demanded more from him than anything else since The Bank Job, the press was probably too busy marveling at his buzzcut to pay proper attention.
