'Backrooms' Tops Box Office, Bests 'The Mandalorian and Grogu'

In a surprising turn of events at the box office for the weekend of May 29 - May 31, a new champion arose from the horror genre (per Variety). Director Kane Parsons and A24 came to theaters on May 29 with Backrooms, which highlights a struggling alcoholic furniture store owner who discovers a portal in his basement; this leads to an endless maze-like dimension of unsettling liminal spaces and imperfect clones, delivering scary and creepy imagery from start to finish. Led by Chiwetel Ejiofor (known for his work in 12 Years a Slave and the MCU), this film earned $81.5 million at the domestic box office, the fourth-highest domestic opening weekend total of the year and the biggest ever for the studio.
