Films and TV series depicting World War II have become a genre of their own. Classics such as Saving Private Ryan, Das Boot, A Bridge Too Far, and Come and See remain the go-to titles for viewers looking for the best in war movies, with others tuning in for TV shows such as Band of Brothers and The Pacific. But as great as they are, few of them truly stand out in how they depict World War II outside the conventions of realism. That distinction almost exclusively belongs to a 2009 war feature that has just returned to streaming to show viewers that not all great war films should be taken as history lessons.
