A good adaptation of a classic sci-fi novel is incredibly rare. Ridley Scott's Blade Runner and Denis Villeneuve's Dune made it look easy. But, there have been countless failed attempts to bring classic science fiction stories to the big screen. David Lynch's Dune (we know it's a cult-classic, but it's still bad), 2002's The Time Machine, Michael B. Jordan's Fahrenheit 451, Will Smith's I Am Legend, and Marlon Brando's The Island of Dr. Moreau were all major failures. In 2004, one of the most divisive sci-fi adaptations of all time released in theaters. It certainly has its fans, but it's safe to say the movie completely alienated fans of the original book. But, 22 years later, it's still finding new success on streaming.
