Prime Video's 'Sex Criminals' Series Adds 'The Marvels' Director Nia DaCosta

Nia DaCosta is one of many indie filmmakers who Marvel Studios tapped to put their own spin on a massive franchise, much like Taika Waititi, James Gunn, and Jon Watts. After the first Captain Marvel made more than $1 billion globally, DaCosta told another adventure featuring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, while also adding Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) into the mix. With Marvel Cinematic Universe films on a downward financial trajectory after 2019's Avengers: Endgame, the coronavirus pandemic pausing production, and the 2023 writers' and actors' strikes preventing cast and crew from promoting the movie, The Marvels has become the lowest-grossing entry in the franchise. DaCosta is set to return to the world of comics, but for a project with different stakes.
