'Frankenstein' review: Guillermo del Toro tells his most personal story yet

Director Guillermo del Toro has been trying to adapt Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein into cinematic form for ages. And thankfully, the version that shambles its way to the screen courses with all the passion, reverence and creativity that’s evident when someone has ruminated on a text for 30 years. While many will view this Netflix original on their phones, del Toro’s expansive ambition is trying to break free from the boundaries of whatever screen it’s being watched on. It has the love for period-accurate aesthetics and practical effects that del Toro brings to all of his projects, this time grafted upon his most personal story yet. At its core, it's a film about how humanity and monstrosity are simply states of being, ones that we can oscillate between depending on our capacity to forgive.
