Disney & Universal Become First Studios To Sue Midjourney AI for Copyright Infringement

Fashion & Beauty

Disney and Universal, two competitors in the film production and theme park industries, are putting aside their differences to fight a common foe: AI-generated images. The two companies filed a joint lawsuit on Jun. 10, 2025, against Midjourney, a generative AI startup. Disney and NBC Universal (NBCU) are alleging copyright infringement, claiming Midjourney’s website “displays hundreds, if not thousands, of images generated by its Image Service at the request of its subscribers that infringe Plaintiffs’ Copyrighted Works.” The two studios seek unspecified monetary damages and “preliminary and/or permanent injunctive relief enjoining and restraining Midjourney” from infringing on or distributing their copyrighted works.
